Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival that is celebrated for 10 days to honour Lord Ganesha’s birthday. Ganesha is the second son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. There are many stories when it comes to the birth of Ganesha but the most well known one is where Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati. What He was created by also has many variations such as sandalwood, dirt, turmeric etc. Goddess Parvati created him so He could guard Her door while She finished taking a bath. Lord Shiva was not aware of this and therefore when He returned, Ganesha stopped him from entering, furious about this Lord Shiva cut off Ganesha head. When Paravati saw what happened, she was absolutely livid. Seeing this Shiva promised Parvati that Ganesha would live again. Shiva ordered the devas to to go out in search of a head. They could only manage to find the head of an elephant. Once this was brought back Shiva fixed the elephant head on Ganesha and brought him back to life. We celebrate this day annually as Ganesh Chaturthi. This year (2020) Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the 22 of August .
